Description

The Tchotchkes Crochet Challah makes the perfect Chrismukkah ornament, or use as a wall or window hanging or car ornament!

Chai Modern has always worked with local Jewish artists, and to this end they have done a collaborative range with the Peta Becker Projekt - a design-based fair trade initiative, started in 2006, providing ongoing skills training to women from Zimbabwe, Malawi, Congo & South Africa.

Through training, workshops, and lessons their members continue to develop, and in so doing allow these women to continually add fresh elements to their design vocabulary.

The aim of this initiative has always been to create original designs and to keep the teaching within the project so that artisans who decide to teach can earn additional income. The makers can work from home, which suits many women with young children.

The members meet once a week to review their work, share some refreshments and collect fresh yarn and instructions for their next deliveries.

We hope that you’ll enjoy each piece of your Chai Modern & Projekt collab as much as their family has enjoyed creating them.

These items are handmade, so no two pieces will be exactly the same. The nature of their creation means that additional lead time is required.

Modern Judaica design

Chai Modern is a Cape Town design studio that makes traditional Judaica in a simple, fresh and modern way. The name is the idea: chai means life, and the studio sets out to bring that to modern Jewish families. Everything is made in South Africa and shipped around the world.

Its collections carry Yiddish names like Mensch, Chutzpah, Oy Vey and Zilch, and are worked in ceramic, wood and metal, acrylic, eco resin and wire, from menorahs, candlesticks and challah boards to seder plates, matzah covers and tallit bags. Chai Modern pieces have also been sold by the Jewish Museum shop in New York and by Maisonette.
