Hand-drawn illustration on cotton and paper

Susan Hazel Rich grew up in Chesterland, Ohio, studied graphic design at Kent State, and left a design career in 2014 to start Hazelmade. The business began in a small apartment, where her hand-drawn designs found a local following, and has since grown into a studio in Kent, Ohio.

Every Hazelmade design is drawn by hand. Early on she drew heavily on 1960s retro patterns and the old-fashioned telephones, typewriters and mixers of the era. Those drawings end up on cotton flour sack tea towels, greeting cards and note cards. Everything is made and printed in the USA through small, often woman-owned and family-owned businesses, with sustainably printed paper, sustainably sewn fabrics and minimal, plastic-free packaging.

At ModernTribe you'll find her apples and pomegranates flour sack tea towels, two very Rosh Hashanah fruits for drying the good dishes after the holiday meal. Hazelmade is a longtime maker at Pittsburgh's Handmade Arcade, first taking part in 2015.
