Mrs. Meshugga began in December 2012, when Lisa Buber couldn't find a single Hanukkah shirt among the Christmas ones at a big box store. She designed her own, a "You Spin Me Right Round" dreidel shirt. Her husband posted a picture on Facebook, and in less than an hour people were asking how to get one in time for Hanukkah. ("Meshugga" is Yiddish for crazy, and the brand owns it.)
From there Mrs. Meshugga grew into custom shirts for holidays and family occasions, plus Jewish kitchen and table goods like challah boards, tea towels and pot holders, all sourced, designed and decorated in New Jersey. Today Buber runs Mrs. Meshugga as a modern needlepoint shop and creative community in Maplewood, New Jersey. She learned needlepoint from her mom and grandmothers, and her shop leans modern and irreverent. That's a long way from the traditional stores where she remembers always being the youngest person in the room.
