Every Jewish holiday begins at sundown on the first date shown and ends at nightfall on the last. Dates follow the calendar used outside Israel, where a few holidays run one day longer.

How the Jewish Calendar Works
The Hebrew calendar follows the moon, with each month starting at the new moon. A lunar year is about 11 days shorter than a solar one, so seven times every 19 years an extra month (a second Adar) is added. That keeps Passover in the spring and Sukkot in the fall. 5787 is one of those leap years, which is why Purim and Passover fall later in 2027 than they did in 2026.

Why do Jewish holidays change dates every year?
The Hebrew calendar is lunisolar: months follow the moon, and a leap month is added seven times every 19 years to keep the holidays in their seasons. So a holiday falls on the same Hebrew date each year, but a different date on the secular calendar.
Why do Jewish holidays start at sundown?
In the Hebrew calendar a day runs from evening to evening, following the creation story in Genesis ("there was evening and there was morning"). So every holiday, and every Shabbat, begins at sundown the night before.
