- CNC-machined anodized aluminum
Akilov is the Judaica line of Israeli designer Benjamin "Benny" Akilov, who makes mezuzahs, seder and matzah plates, Hanukkah menorahs, dreidels, and Shabbat pieces from color-anodized aluminum. The brand now also goes by the name Benjamin Judaica.
Benny's fascination with design began in Tashkent, and he went on to graduate with honors in mechanical engineering. After emigrating to Israel, he opened a CNC machining factory in Jerusalem in 1997, at first helping people with creative ideas bring them to life. Working with the machines showed him what aluminum could do, with its strength, workability, and good looks, and that sparked the urge to design his own products.
He calls each piece "a blend of art and engineering." His designs are made from aluminum and finished with techniques like sandblasting and anodizing, which gives them their saturated color and staying power. The look is modern and graphic, with pieces made in Israel for everyday Jewish ritual, from the doorpost to the seder table.
