Rachael Pots is the ceramics studio of Rachael Scharf, a native New Yorker who has run it from Sunset Park, Brooklyn, since 2013. She found the potter's wheel after college, at a weekly throwing class in Washington, DC. Two and a half years later she went to Florence for a yearlong post-baccalaureate program at SACI, focused on throwing and form. She then spent three summers as a studio assistant at La Meridiana, an international ceramics school in Tuscany, assisting ceramicists from around the world.
She started RachaelPots to sell at New York City craft fairs, and it grew into wholesale and wedding registries. Every piece is thrown on the wheel in speckled cone 6 stoneware, finished with food-safe glazes and fired in an electric kiln in her studio. She works function-first: a mug that feels good in the hand, she writes, is a mug that is pleasing to look at.
Her Judaica follows the same idea. There's a seder plate with hand-carved Hebrew lettering and six matching bowls, a kiddush cup, Shabbat candlesticks, and a menorah made of nine hand-thrown mini bottles.
