- Since
- 2008
- Craft
- Hand-cut glass mosaic and resin
Karen Gordon's mosaic habit started secondhand. Her daughter Sydney took an interest in the craft as a young girl, then moved on to other passions. Karen didn't. She discovered mosaics in 2008 and worked at a small desk tucked into a basement closet, with some nippers and glue. She has since taken over the entire basement, which is now a full studio with grinders, saws and an abundance of glass.
Her specialty is the Jewish wedding glass. Karen sets the glass broken under the chuppah into mezuzahs, hamsas, dreidels, hearts, trinket trays and Tree of Life designs. ModernTribe carries her smash glass mosaic mezuzah case along with framed, personalized heart and Tree of Life pieces. She also works in resin, makes pieces from heirloom china and preserves flowers from weddings and other big days. A custom mezuzah can even take on sprinkles, a team logo or real coffee beans.
After retiring from a 30-year teaching career, she now has more time for the saws and the glue.
