Hand-sawn and cast metal

Emily Rosenfeld has made jewelry her whole adult life. She started during a gap year in college, kept going after graduating as an English major, and learned the trade working for other designers. In 1991 she started selling her own designs, running the business for two years out of a Murphy bed closet in Oakland, California.

Judaica arrived in her second year in business, when her stores began asking for Jewish pieces. Her graphic, representational style took easily to Stars of David and chais, and mezuzahs were the first Judaic pieces she designed, a chance to work in carved wax instead of only sawing metal. She thinks of jewelry as a talisman, "an adornment with power."

Her inspiration comes from plants, textiles, prints and embroidery, and her songbird mezuzah grew out of evenings listening to birdsong with her son. Her mezuzahs, kiddush cups, tzedakah boxes, keychains and sterling silver necklaces and earrings come out of a light-filled studio in a converted factory building in Western Massachusetts, shared with other artists. The Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History's store carries her work too.
