Making latkes is the best

Dan Guterman

My favorite tradition is making latkes, not only is cooking with the whole family a blessing, but the passing down of the recipe is so beautiful to me.

My favorite holiday tradition is decorating and lighting the candles with my kids, as I used to with my parents when I was growing up 🕎

I love making frosted chanukah cookies with my kids and the annual latke meal, One time per year, my mom made the latkes… we eat directly out of the pan because that is how they are best. Unfortunately, my mom is gone, but I have taken over the annual latke making, filling my clothes and the whole house with the smell of latkes.

My favorite Hanukkah tradition is going to sound materialistic, BUT – I grew up without a lot of money, and my birthday also falls on December 23rd, so I didn’t get a lot of presents for Hanukkah and/or my bday. I’ve made it my mission to make sure my kids get 8 nights of gifts. Our Hanukkah gifts are more experience-focused vs. material things, though – so for example, I’ll make little paper dreidels that my kids will open up on each night that say, “IOU a Mommy and Me Day” for my kids to cash in on, and then we’ll go and spend the day together doing something fun that my kids want to do!
