PiccoliNY began with a smell. On her commute to Bloomingdale's SoHo, Alex Zagami Ng stepped off the R train at Prince Street each morning to the smell of hot dogs and pretzels, and put that simple New York comfort on a baby onesie. The first ones were printed in a tiny East Village shop and sold out at the Feast of San Gennaro, with a little help from friends at Rubirosa.
Alex is a native New Yorker from a family of downtown shopkeepers. Her grandfather ran a bakery in Little Italy for more than 60 years, and her aunt had a kids' store much like hers. The first PiccoliNY shop opened on Mulberry Street in 2011. Today she and her husband, Tyler, are raising their two sons in Chinatown.
The line is carried by the MoMA Design Store, Saks and Merci in Paris, and has collaborated with the Empire State Building. At ModernTribe it's all about the deli counter: natural rubber teethers shaped like a bagel with schmear and lox and a black-and-white cookie.
