Gumball Poodle started with a pair of socks nobody was making. During the 2008 presidential race, founder Erica Easley went looking for Obama knee socks, couldn't find any, and made her own. She has said she put $2,400 of her savings into that first batch, and the idea grew into a statement-sock brand with well over a hundred styles.
Easley came from fashion: she did PR in New York, ran The Red Light in Portland, which the brand calls the West Coast's largest vintage clothing store, and co-wrote Rock Tease (Abrams Image, 2006), a book on vintage rock t-shirts. She saw socks the way she saw tees, as a canvas for self-expression, and the brand has been spotted on Beyoncé and Madonna.
Everything is made in the USA. At ModernTribe the Jewish styles lead: Nice Jewish Boy and Nice Jewish Girl gym socks in blue and white, the Mensch gym crew socks, plus I Heart Pickles and lucky mahjong socks.
