Sandi Katz is a Jewish glass artist who has been making mezuzah cases since 2001. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, she now lives in Boca Raton, Florida.
Her work is rooted in traditions passed down from her mother, and she says it keeps her mother close in her heart. Each case is made by hand and kiln-fired, and it takes about 12 hours from the start of a piece until the firing is complete. The designs range from rainbow mosaics and droplet patterns to metallic shimmer, and some are set with Swarovski crystals. Her wedding mezuzahs are made to hold the shards of the glass broken under the chuppah, so a couple can keep that moment at their door.
She describes the appeal as a chance to combine function, beauty and the warmth of tradition, with endless design possibilities within the form. At ModernTribe, her cases have included the Rainbow Mosaic, Glistening Tides, Enchanted Garden and Swarovski crystal wedding shards designs.
