Sculptural and refined, these Cream Marble Shabbat Candlesticks by Hannah Polskin bring a softened elegance to ritual practice. Hannah Polskin is a Los Angeles artist whose sculptural menorahs and Shabbat candlesticks are made to stay out all year long.
She grew up in New York City, graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design in 2010, and later settled in Los Angeles, where she works across painting, sculpture in stone and wood, and functional objects in a practice she calls Livable Art. She debuted her menorah sculptures in 2021, carrying the undulating shapes of her abstract paintings into three dimensions. Her goal, she told Wallpaper, was a piece "displayed proudly year-round as a sculptural object instead of being stored in the back of a credenza collecting dust." Some people see Hebrew letters in the forms, she says; some see animals.
The menorahs ModernTribe carries are carved from solid blocks of Nero Marquina, Calacatta Viola and Dark Emperador marble, plus a nickel-finish version, and her candlesticks are a marble and resin composite. In 2024 she invited Jewish artists Amy Morgenstern and Alyssa Goodman to layer their own work onto her menorahs, a collaboration she called "Hanukkah Class of 2024." Her work has been shown at Space Gallery in New York and St Barths and at Bergdorf Goodman.
