Ner Mitzvah began just after World War II with a small card left for families in the old Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. It came with a beeswax havdalah candle and eight beeswax Hanukkah candles, and asked customers to "send as much as you can afford to pay."
The company is still family-run, makes its own beeswax candles in a New York factory and bottles its own olive oil for burning. At ModernTribe the range spans Hanukkah candles in spiral and Star of David designs, pre-filled olive oil cups, build-your-own brick menorah and dreidel sets, light-up dreidels and Purim party supplies.
