Melanie Dankowicz works in cut metal and paper, pairing traditional Judaic motifs with contemporary themes. Her specialty is metalcut artwork drawn from Jewish papercutting design, and her compositions span ketubot, Judaica, jewelry, sculpture and wall art. For over 25 years her Judaic designs have been made in the USA and collected around the world.
Her work began in 1994, when she created a ketubah for her own wedding. Hebrew text is still central: she places letters to bring out both their beauty and their meaning, often wrapped in plant life like vines, pomegranates and blooming trees. Her Spring Seder Plate, lasercut from stainless steel, won the 2010 NICHE Award for Judaica. She has exhibited at the Spertus Institute in Chicago, the Hebrew Union College Museum in New York and the Sherwin Miller Museum of Jewish Art in Tulsa, and she is an associate artist member of the Jewish Artists Collective Chicago.
At ModernTribe you'll find her papercut ketubot, mounted on archival art paper printed with your text, plus sterling silver pendants and Hebrew letter clocks.
