Jennie Lennick trained as a painter. Born in Minneapolis, she earned a BFA in drawing, painting and printmaking from the University of Minnesota Duluth in 2009, then an MFA in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2012. She showed her work in galleries but sold little of it, so in 2015 she shifted to products and launched Jenny Lemons as a hand-printed clothing line in San Francisco's Mission District. The name comes from her college DJ moniker.
In January 2018 she opened a Mission District shop, studio and workshop space, which she ran until the end of 2023. By then the hair clips had taken over. A connection made at a 2022 craft fair led her to a claw clip maker, and her food-shaped clips in cellulose acetate, a plant-based material derived from wood pulp, quickly outsold the clothing. Strawberries, pickles, croissants, oysters and Swiss chard are all in the lineup, and the brand has collaborated with Ban.do, Urban Outfitters and Aerie.
At ModernTribe the fruit bowl leans holiday: a large pomegranate claw and a mini red apple clip, both ready for the Rosh Hashanah table.
