Susie Lubell is a self-taught artist and illustrator known for contemporary ketubahs. A California native, she moved with her family to Israel in 2011 and is based in Tzur Hadassah, in the hills outside Jerusalem. She has been painting and designing ketubahs since 2009.
Her style is graphic but warm, with bright, watery color and a hand-painted imperfection she leaves in on purpose. Many designs carry Jewish meaning in their shapes: the seven native fruits of Israel form a circle in her Seven Species ketubah, and Circling draws on the custom of circling at the start of a Jewish wedding. In her broader work she layers vintage materials with acrylics, tissue paper, oil pastels and paint markers, filling scenes with spirited animals, quirky gardens and whimsical buildings.
Her watercolor animal collection is on permanent display at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital in Palo Alto, and in 2015 she was one of 54 Jewish women artists in The Women of the Book, which debuted at the Jerusalem Biennale.
