Description

A fresh, rustic take on the classic chai pendant; equally at home on a man or a woman. One side features the Hebrew word "chai" (life), and the other shows the number 18, the numeric value of chet and yud. Wear it either way, depending on the day. It's the kind of meaningful, wear-it-forever piece that makes a perfect bar or bat mitzvah gift, graduation present, or treat for anyone with something worth celebrating. Which, let's be honest, is all of us.

  • Handmade in the USA by Marla Studio
  • Bronze square pendant
  • Double-sided: "Chai" in Hebrew on one side, the number 18 on the other

Craft
Hebrew and Kabbalah jewelry

MarLa Studio makes jewelry with an edge and a reason. "None of us has skin thick enough for this world," says MarLa, the artist behind the studio. "We put on some metal and leather and feel transformed." Each piece is handmade in the USA from recycled metals and ships in biodegradable, recyclable packaging, with influences that run from 1970s New York punk to the archaeology of the early Roman Empire.

The Jewish side of the line is its heart. MarLa works in Hebrew and Kabbalah, including a collection built on the 72 Names of God, with prayer excerpts and sayings like "Gam Zeh Ya'avor" (this too shall pass) in Hebrew on one side and English on the other. At ModernTribe you'll find her sterling silver and bronze necklaces and rings, from Hebrew initial signets to "All the World Is a Narrow Bridge," made to wear every day.
