- Hand-drawn illustration and enamel jewelry
Sarah Day Arts is the studio of Sarah Day, a self-taught Jewish illustrator in Seattle whose bright, hand-drawn Magen Davids, hamsas, chai flowers and challah studs turn Jewish symbols into enamel jewelry, stickers and art prints.
She grew up in Encinitas, California, and was on a fast track toward rabbinical school when, in her words, "my body intervened" and that pace became out of reach. Judaism was already in her art: at a pre-rabbinic fellowship in Australia, she drew educational resources by hand to get through a stressful job. She began with hand lettering in 2015, moved into small illustrations, and in 2018 took the business mostly full time, with some synagogue teaching on the side.
"Day" isn't her last name. She told the Jewish Women's Archive it nods to the artist Tuesday Bassen, a close friend named Wednesday, and probably New Girl's Jessica Day. Her Judaica jewelry is hard enamel set in 22k gold-plated brass, and making it, she says, feels different from her other work: "I'm creating for my people."
