Christopher Noble, who ran a house-painting business, and Jay Purvis, a former Condé Nast art director, made the first batch of cards in Noble's Manhattan kitchen with a $400 loan from Noble's mother. Ron Kanfi joined in 1983, became a partner in 1987 and took over as creative director after Noble died in 2001. The company moved from New York to Hoboken and then to Union City, New Jersey, and calls itself The Humor Company, with jokes that run from family-friendly to full-on risqué.
ModernTribe carries its Hanukkah card packs, including Spare a Latke, featuring a Hilary B. Price cartoon, plus Hanukkatz, Menorah Blahniks and Fa La La La Latke.
