Maiyan Ben Yona is an Israeli ceramic designer who makes porcelain Judaica and tableware in a studio in south Tel Aviv, which she calls an island of calm within the energy of the city. She grew up in the green, quiet landscape of the Galilee and fell in love with clay at age five. She went on to study ceramic and glass design at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem, earning academic excellence awards in her second and third years.
She works mainly in porcelain, throwing on the wheel and slip casting, then painting the surfaces by hand. Travel shaped her patterns. She discovered Moroccan ceramics as a young adult and draws motifs from different cultures into a visual language of her own. Her pieces are non-toxic, food-safe and dishwasher-safe.
Her work at ModernTribe has included patterned seder plates and seder dishes, a Star of David honey dish set, and porcelain mezuzah cases. The Jewish Museum shop in New York also carries her seder plates, matzah plates and mezuzahs.
