Kenny Haisfield, a UNC-Chapel Hill grad, was working as a corporate consultant in New York when a hand-me-down Hawaiian shirt from his dad got him thinking. In 2015 he quit, moved in with his grandmother in Bali, and started making Hawaiian shirts for his friends. That first summer he traveled around selling them out of a duffel bag.
Bali stayed at the center of the brand. Kenny also started CEO4TEENS, an education foundation that sponsors Indonesian teenagers, and through it the brand says it has sent more than 150 students to college in Bali. Shirts and coverups are hand-cut and sewn in a boutique factory in Bali, and swimwear is made in an all-women-run factory in Medellín, Colombia. Look for the coconut buttons and the sunglasses loop on the pocket. His wife Christina, a travel blogger and the brand's first female customer, now co-leads the company, and together they grew it into women's resort and swimwear, with a flagship store on King Street in Charleston, South Carolina.
