Description

Sands Pastel Wedding Shards Mezuzah with break glass cylinder combines handmade fused glass with hand cast pewter. The Sands Pastel pattern it is a combination of blue, pink, green and purple glass enamels. The tube on the front is for the couple to fill with the shards of their wedding break glass and makes a wonderful keepsake. The scroll fits in the back and is included (non-kosher) as are the nails to hang it. Kosher scroll sold separately. We recommended pre-nailing holes in the water to avoid hammering on the glass.

Sara and Michael Beames started Beames Designs in 1990 and work from a studio next to their home in the Catskill Mountains near Kingston, New York. Sara, who holds an art degree from San Francisco State University, is the artist: after working with many kinds of glass, she found her medium in fused glass. Michael runs logistics and operations.

Their Jewish ritual objects combine the ancient art of fused, kiln-fired glass with cast pewter, aluminum, wood and other elements, and weddings are a specialty. At ModernTribe you'll find wedding shards mezuzahs that pair handmade fused glass with hand-cast pewter and hold the glass broken under the chuppah, along with hand-blown wedding smash glasses in a range of colors and a dove electric yahrzeit.

Their work has found public homes, too. In 2000 Sara was commissioned to create an Eternal Flame sculpture, a gift from the Jewish Federation of Ulster County for the reopening of Kingston City Hall. The studio also made an ornament for the White House that is now in the Clinton Library.
