Marlyn Schiff grew up in Penn Valley, outside Philadelphia, studied art history at Rutgers, and went through Macy's executive training program before working as an account executive for New York fashion houses. On lunch breaks she wandered the Garment District's bead stores, making pieces just for fun. When coworkers started ordering the jewelry she wore to meetings, the hobby became a business. She made it official in 1989 and a few years later moved the company home to the Philadelphia area.
In October 2019, on her 30th year in business, she opened her first store, a 3,800-square-foot boutique in Haverford. Her jewelry has been featured on Good Morning America.
Schiff lost her mother to ovarian cancer and supports the Ovarian Cancer Research Alliance, the Sandy Rollman Ovarian Cancer Foundation and the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia. During the pandemic she donated more than 50,000 surgical masks to area hospitals and nursing homes, and in 2021 the Accessories Council named her an Industry Hero. Her Jewish pieces at ModernTribe include a gold-plated Star of David ring, Star of David hoop earrings and a lapis and mother-of-pearl chai necklace.
