Capital Stitch Co. started in the first year of the pandemic, when founder Miri took up embroidery and found out how therapeutic handwork could be. She had a high-stress job at the time and figured plenty of people could use a craft but didn't have time to teach themselves one. When a local shop asked for a kit, the business was off and running, launched on about $400.
The kits are built for true beginners, with a stick-down pattern that washes away, a hoop, cotton thread and step-by-step instructions that download to your phone, all compact enough to toss in a bag for the metro. The Judaica kits at ModernTribe are a mini hanukkiah, a lulav and etrog, and an ancient-style hamsa, all made in the USA.
Miri also teaches beginner classes around DC and hosts free meetups where anyone can come stitch together. Capital Stitch describes itself as women-owned, trans-owned and disabled-owned, and it has partnered with Major League Soccer, the Washington National Cathedral and the Smithsonian.
