How many candles do you light for Hanukkah?
During the eight nights of Hanukkah, a total of 44 candles are typically lit. The lighting of the candles follows a specific pattern:
On the first night, one candle is lit, plus the ""shamash"" (helper) candle, making a total of two candles.
On the second night, an additional candle is added, making it three candles (plus the shamash).
This pattern continues throughout the holiday:
- First night: 2 candles (1 + shamash)
- Second night: 3 candles (2 + shamash)
- Third night: 4 candles (3 + shamash)
- Fourth night: 5 candles (4 + shamash)
- Fifth night: 6 candles (5 + shamash)
- Sixth night: 7 candles (6 + shamash)
- Seventh night: 8 candles (7 + shamash)
- Eighth night: 9 candles (8 + shamash) By the eighth and final night of Hanukkah, all eight regular candles (representing the eight days of the holiday) plus the shamash candle have been lit, totaling nine candles in the menorah. Remember that when lighting the Hanukkah candles, you add one candle each night, starting from the right side and moving to the left, but when reciting the blessings, you do so before lighting any candles. The lighting of the candles serves as a beautiful and joyous commemoration of the miracle of the oil that lasted eight days in the Temple's menorah.
