Grey Theory Mill is the San Diego jewelry brand of Jonnie Estes (pronounced "john-ny"), best known for tiny stamped statement earrings that, in the brand's words, spark laughter and eye rolls from coast to coast. Its motto: hand-crafted jewelry with a touch of sass, a pinch of the profane, yet always classy.
Jonnie opened her Etsy shop on April 3, 2010, during an art-department special projects class at Palomar College, under the made-up name Windeymoor. In early 2012 she renamed it, wanting a name with "grey" in it, and has said that starting the business became her own classroom for art, design and marketing. The shop began with hand-painted shirts, sewn notebooks and chalkboard signs before settling into jewelry.
The line aims for simple, edgy, hypoallergenic pieces made with ethically sourced materials at accessible prices, and every pair of earrings uses nickel-free titanium posts or hooks. ModernTribe has carried the Yiddish side of the humor: "Oy Vey" brass earrings and a "Verklempt" bar necklace.
