Modern metal Judaica

Laura Cowan trained in silversmithing and jewellery at London Guildhall University, then moved from London to Tel Aviv, where she designs and handcrafts modern Judaica in a studio in the Neve Tzedek neighborhood.

Much of her work looks back to the 1960s space race and the moon landings, often through simplified rocket shapes. "There is an irony in creating futuristic designs inspired by what is now history," she says. The story came full circle in May 2008, when two of her mezuzahs traveled to the International Space Station on Expedition 17, chosen by NASA astronaut Greg Chamitoff.

Her pieces pair mirror-polished stainless steel with anodized aluminum in clean, geometric forms: Moon Crater seder plates and challah trays, magnetic modular menorahs, Apollo mezuzahs whose windows echo the spacecraft, and Dune seder plates and candlesticks shaped by the curves of the Sinai desert. Her Judaica has been shown at the Jewish Museum in New York, the Jewish Museum Vienna and the Spertus Museum in Chicago.
