Description

“Mishpacha” means family. This sculpture evokes a warm, inclusive expression that goes beyond blood relations, capturing the deep sense of connection, loyalty, and shared responsibility that defines family in Jewish culture. It carries emotional weight, often used to welcome others, strengthen bonds, and remind everyone that they are part of something larger, rooted in tradition, care, and mutual respect.

Precision-cut, hand-painted art

Glenn Grubard is a self-taught Hudson Valley artist who builds on the centuries-old Chinese art of paper cutting, reworking it as precision-cut, hand-painted Jewish art. Many of his designs carry an inspirational saying, hymn, or prayer, meant to encourage and motivate whoever lives with them.

Every piece starts as a digital design. His framed paper-cut artwork is cut from archival museum board and hand-painted with eco-friendly acrylics for a metallic finish. The mezuzahs at ModernTribe are precision-cut from mahogany wood, hand-painted, and mounted on anodized aluminum. Glenn also brings years of experience as a commercial designer and business owner to the work.

The mezuzahs are where his sense of fun shows. There are music designs for fans of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Queen, Phish, and Springsteen, team mezuzahs for sports fans, and wedding mezuzahs made to hold the glass broken at the ceremony. He also makes personalized Hebrew word sculptures, including Shalom, Ahava, Mishpacha, and Mensch.

His personalized pieces have been owned by Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Carlos Santana, Todd Rundgren, and Zac Brown, and his work sells in museum shops around the country, including the store of the Weitzman National Museum of American Jewish History.
