- Hebrew calendars, guided journals
Sarah Waxman grew up with Hebrew school and summer camp and still felt disconnected from the Judaism of her childhood. Then a friend in Washington, D.C. introduced her to Rosh Chodesh, the minor holiday that marks each new moon, and she found a way in. Waxman, a certified yoga and mindfulness instructor who had taught mind-body education in schools, built At the Well around that experience.
The core idea borrows from Lean In circles. A Well Circle is a small group that meets every Rosh Chodesh, usually in someone's home, to talk, share stories and work through a monthly Moon Manual of texts, poems, meditations and recipes. At the Well, now a 501(c)(3) nonprofit based in Washington, D.C., says nearly 6,000 people have joined or started Well Circles in 37 countries.
The practice comes home through its Hebrew calendars and the Moon by Moon guided journal, with prompts for each month. The 5787 calendar pairs every Hebrew month with a watercolor skyscape by Judaica artist Chaya Toron.
