Workman Publishing started Artisan to publish subjects best told visually, through photography, illustration and design, with a list that covers cooking, lifestyle and gardening. Workman itself was founded in New York by Peter Workman in 1968 and stayed independent and family-owned for more than 50 years before joining Hachette Book Group in 2021.
For Jewish readers, Artisan is home to books made with Tablet magazine: The 100 Most Jewish Foods, edited by Tablet editor-in-chief Alana Newhouse; The Newish Jewish Encyclopedia, by the hosts of the Unorthodox podcast; and The Passover Haggadah: An Ancient Story for Modern Times. ModernTribe carries The 100 Most Jewish Foods, plus a 100 Most Jewish Foods jigsaw puzzle and a Jewish Foods sticker book.
