Description
An elderly Black grandmother passes on the story of the family's Jewish origins to her young granddaughter, Carol Olivia. As family members flee the Spanish Inquisition, are kidnapped by pirates and eventually sail to America, one daughter in each generation is given the name Olivia, from the Hebrew Shulamit meaning peace, to honor the Jewish part of their ancestry. Critically-acclaimed author Carolivia Herron (Nappy Hair) shares this engaging, multicultural tale is based on her own family's heritage.

The name joins the founders' youngest children: Madeline's daughter Karen and Judye's son Ben. From Rockville, Maryland, the pair built Kar-Ben into a home for Jewish picture books, earning the Sydney Taylor Book Award committee's Body of Work honor, before Lerner Publishing Group bought the press. It now publishes from Minneapolis and calls itself the largest publisher of exclusively Jewish-themed children's books in the world, covering holidays, life-cycle moments, folktales, Israel and Jewish history. ModernTribe carries Hanukkah and Purim picture books like Golem Loves Latkes and The Queen Who Saved Her People, the My Family Haggadah board book, and the yearly Executive Jewish Calendar.
